It is needed for the 2 player game of "Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix". It can also be used for "Karaoke Revolution Party" which adds more fun to the game. It is a better quality pad than the Mad Catz or other generic pads. If you have game, this pad is the best for Gamecube pad Since it is original pad, I prefer this one to others however there are also third party deluxe version of Gamecube pad, different category though. I like this one and I have been using for 6 months, but be carefull it doesn't come with the game so you need to buy MarioMix game as well.
